1. Caviar Eggs Benedict, Waldorf Astoria New York, USA

NY Breakfast - Eggs Benedict at Oscars Brasserie, Waldorf Astoria

Not only was the Waldorf Salad invented at this venerable art deco hotel, but it’s also credited with bestowing that delicious first dish of the day upon the world, Eggs Benedict.

Added to the menu in the 1890s by legendary maitre d’ Oscar Tschirky, the dish consists of a split English muffin topped with ham or bacon, poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce.

Eggs Benedict has evolved at the hotel since then – in the luxury direction. Today, you can order the American classic on the weekends at Oscar’s Brasserie with crab or caviar, as well as the more conventional ham or smoked salmon.

The prices: $21-$26 (£13-£16); waldorfnewyork.com

2. Britain’s ‘most expensive’ breakfast, Feversham Arms Hotel, England

Britain’s ‘most expensive’ breakfast

This boutique north Yorkshire hotel is renowned for its cheese trolley and 2-AA Rosette restaurant.

It doesn’t skimp on breakfast either, dishing up the UK’s most expensive spread, according to the Express.

The luxury spread includes Oscetra caviar, Balik smoked salmon (costing up to £135 for 500g), two local duck eggs, crème fraiche and mini brioches.

Washed down with Laurent Perrier champagne, this is certainly one way to start the day.

The price: £120 for two people; fevershamarmshotel.com

3. The three-hour tasting men, Hotel Hospes Maricel and Spa, Spain

The three-hour tasting menu

This luxury hotel and spa near Palma has a three-hour breakfast tasting menu that was once named the best breakfast in the world at Madrid Fusion, a top Spanish foodie event.

Its ingredients varying seasonally, the marathon morning meal starts with fresh juices, then moves on to yogurt with fruit compotes (such as papaya, orange and clove) and toast with salty or sweet butters (including zucchini and vanilla jam flavours).

Next up is a hot dish, such as Mallorcan pie with Iberian ham, followed by eggs with mushrooms and hazelnut cream and a glass of red wine (apparently it’s delicious at this hour of the morning).

The breakfast finishes with fresh pastries, milkshakes and smoothies – presumably almost in time for lunch.

The price: €45 (£36), hospes.com

4. Let them eat cake… chocolate cake… for breakfast, Hotel Sacher, Wienna, Austria

Chocolate Cake for Breakfast, Hotel Sacher, Wien, Austria

Who said you can’t have cake for breakfast? At this grand hotel in Vienna, home of the famous Sacher-Torte, it would be rude not to.

The buffet breakfast includes the rich chocolate cake, layered with apricot jam and covered in dark chocolate, served with whipped cream.

Hotel Sacher’s pasty chefs bake around 360,000 Sacher-Tortes a year, using the original 1823 recipe, which are shipped all over the world.

That requires a shopping list of 1.2 million eggs, 80 tonnes of sugar, 25 tonnes of butter, 30 tonnes of flour and 75 tonnes of high quality chocolate.

The price: €36, sacher.com

5. The $1,000 omelette, Norma’s at Le Parker Meridien, USA

Caviar omlette for Breakfast, Norma's, New York

The highlight of the Norma’s in New York City hotel restaurant’s all-day breakfast menu is the Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata – the world’s most expensive omelette, according to the Guinness Book of Records.

The frittata contains 280g of caviar and 450g of lobster, served on a bed of fried potatoes, and costs a hefty $1,000 (rather than a zillion).

There’s a smaller version for $100, along with an array of decadent dishes such as mango-papaya brown butter cinnamon crepes.

The damage: $25-$1,000; parkermeridien.com
